I’d heard the phrase a dozen times before reading the article - it’s more of a provocation than real reporting, arguing that artists have that special something that can’t be outsourced and are therefore taking the positions MBA’s, whose number-crunching skills can be replaced. It’s funny how the iMac, and other trickle-down high design, becomes the paradigmatic example of how artists can revolutionize business (as opposed to radically rethinking the fundamental assumptions of the corporation).
I like the idea though — except I’m not really interested in how artists can breathe fresh profits into our corporations, so much as how artists can create a new financial climate for cultural production, how they can produce sustainable art worlds, etc.
