This article was written in 1993 and reflects on some of the “relational” themes that come up a few years later for Bourriaud; but Drucker concentrates on the activity Bourriaud was criticized for excluding. Apparently there is a big Kaprow show coming up this spring in Los Angeles — my neighbor was looking through the archives and found explanations of Kaprow’s experimental school in San Francisco (all school activity would be happenings). Nearby, at University of Redlands, an experiment called Johnston College was initiated which put control in the hands of the entire learning community (as opposed to administrators and teachers). And here in southern California, CalArts and SCI-Arc (originally, The New School) began with radical aspirations. I don’t know what all of this amounts to except a few more strands to tie together the present moment with abandoned opportunities from a few decades ago.
